Kosovo Refugees Flee to Macedonia - April 1999

Ethnic Albanians from Kosovo fled Kosovo and sought refuge in camps set up in Macedonia (and also in Montenegro and Albania) when Serbs began violently targeting Albanians in an effort to rid Kosovo of ethnic Albanians. Below are images from a Macedonian refugee camp that housed up to 30,000 Kosovar Albanian refugees. The images were commissioned by UNHCR and The Lancet medical journal for the MASH unit set up by an Israeli medical team. Other images below include life before and after, including images from Mitrovica, a town with Serbs living in the northern part of the city and Albanians living in the southern part of the city divided by a river.
