Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina - July 2001

Several years after the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina, I traveled there with a journalist to cover 2 stories: how Sarajevo’s local businesses were coming back/how life in general was going; and to visit a DNA lab in Tuzla that was attempting to identify the remains of about 3,000 of the 8,000 men and boys who were killed in the massacre in Srebrenica in 1995. The DNA lab in Tuzla was the first of its kind and its scientists were called upon for their expertise by the U.S. to assist with identifying bodies after 9/11.
